This is American Idol

SYESHA MERCADO
“One Rock and Roll Too Many” from Starlight Express
I caught myself snapping along with the beat within just a few notes. She really got into the song and played it up. I think she may have had a few minor pitch problems, but overall it was a great start to the show. I don’t think she’s going to win the title of American Idol, but she’ll definitely win a spot on Broadway after the show.
RATING: 7.5
PREDICTION: It is the top six and I’m afraid that she may find herself in the bottom three, despite the great performance.
JASON CASTRO
“Memory” from Cats
It was interesting to see Jason singing that song and I think it was a bad choice. It was awful during the low notes and if he wanted to really make that song his own, he could have changed up the melody some. It sounded like the same old Jason. A raspy voice, a few desperate looks into the camera are not going to be enough to win over America.
RATING: 5
PREDICTION: I think Jason’s time on Idol is about to become a memory. Unless someone else completely bombs their song, I think its bye-bye blue eyes.
BROOKE WHITE
“You Must Love Me” from Evita
Wow — another restart from Brooke! I suppose it was a good recovery… NOT! It made her completely off the rest of the song and you just don’t start a song, and then stop it. I think she forgot the words again at one point. I wasn’t impressed at all. Please America, it’s time for Brooke to go home.
RATING: 4
PREDICTION: Sorry Jason for your prediction, I think Brooke just lost. But, as America always does, it will step up and send her some sympathy votes. I still think she’s gone, but as in live television, you never know what’s going to happen.
DAVID ARCHULETA
“Think of Me” from Phantom of the Opera
David made me forget that song was ever a part of Phantom of the Opera. I could easily see that on a pop album. I really liked the changes he made to the song. As always, he had a very solid vocal. I usually agree with Simon, but I will remember his performance because of how much he made that song his. But, it definitely wasn’t one of his best performances, but let’s think about it: he hasn’t ever had a bad one.
RATING: 8
PREDICTION: There’s one place Archuleta hasn’t been and that’s the bottom three. Don’t expect to see him break the trend this week.
CARLY SMITHSON
“Jesus Christ Superstar” from Jesus Christ Superstar
Carly had fun and you could tell. Throw in a nice vocal and you’ve got the ingredients to a great performance. Thank goodness, Carly is back. Her voice was very strong and the energy level was at an all-time high for her. I don’t have much to say, but “Well done, Carly.”
RATING: 8
PREDICTION: She should sail to the top five.
DAVID COOK
“Music of the Night” from Phantom of the Opera
Brilliant! He sang it with passion and with restraint. The last note was great. The first note was great. It was probably one of my favorite vocal performances of the season. I agree with Simon, I do prefer the other side of David, but it was nice to see this side of him. Between him and the other David, I don’t think anyone else stands a chance at winning the title.
RATING: 8.5
PREDICTION: I’ll be shocked if he’s anywhere near the bottom three.
BOTTOM THREE: Brooke White, Jason Castro and Syesha Mercado
GOING HOME: I’ve been trying to get her out of here for some time, so maybe this will be the week that the whiney, tear-filled Brooke White goes home.
TOP PERFORMANCE: David Cook wins it hands down
