In Treatment - Sophie Week 8
Posted March 21, 2008
Paul finally made a breakthrough with troubled little Sophie. Thank goodness. I don't know if I could have tolerated her pathetic outbursts anymore. What a demon child. Maybe I just lack patience. I must say that Paul handled the yelling, inappropriate nakedness, crying, etc. very well. I guess you do have to be patient to be a psychologist.
Sophie's mom drove her to therapy, and they almost had a "moment" in the car. The mother complimented Sophie on her hair, and Sophie wanted to respond. You could tell, but she just couldn't bring herself to do it. Next thing you know, she's in Paul's office crying because she wishes she could say something to her mom. Just having that desire is a big deal for this girl.
With some pretty fancy finessing, Paul was able to push her over the edge. He made her see that she is not responsible for her parents' break up, that her father is a jerk, and that her mother is simply in pain and needs to connect. Sophie also needs to connect. And she did just that when she finished her session. She got in the car and agreed to stop for coffee with her mother. Maybe pigs finally learned how to fly -- or maybe Paul is that good after all.
