Don't try this at home

Posted October 2, 2007

Sometimes my bright ideas turn out to be not so bright.

My daughter Lucy (who is nearly 2) had only had her hair cut once in her short life. It was in April at Disney World, complete with pixie dust, a certificate and special mouse ears. But her hair was starting to look a little messy again so I decided it was time for a trim.

Whenever I comb and dry her hair after a bath, Lucy is content to stand on her step-stool and watch the action in the mirror. So I thought "Why pay somebody to cut her hair? She'll be so good watching me do it in the mirror." Ha! I'm an idiot.

I told her what I was going to do and told her that I just needed her to look in the mirror. That only worked for about two snips. But by then I was committed: I couldn't let her out of the house with a chunk of hair gone.

Lucy would not be still. She stepped up and down on her stool. She squawked at me. She whipped her head back and forth. She grabbed at her hair, I guess to try to save it from me. It's a miracle neither one of us was stabbed.

When I was done, I really couldn't tell if her hair was even straight across the back. So I washed it, dryed it and sent Lucy to her daddy for inspection. I needed a second opinion.

He declared her adorable and so then I guess Lucy decided it was alright because she wandered off to show her brother.

Even though we survived (and Lucy's hair looks pretty cute) I don't know that I will ever try that again.
