TV madness
Posted October 2, 2007
So my husband and I finally bought a flat-screen TV this weekend. And it's all my dad's fault.
David and I have been looking at TVs for awhile but always in the kinda abstract, "wouldn't it be nice to get one of those someday" kind of way. There was nothing wrong with our TV and it wasn't that old.
But then my dad bought a 50-inch plasma several weeks ago. And invited us over. To watch movies. And sports. I could tell by the look in David's eyes that there was an HDTV in my future. The shopping began in earnest. He read reviews and message boards on the Web. We dragged the kids to various stores so we could look at TVs. On the day we bought ours, Sam asked if we were going to get one. David said "That's up to Mommy." Like I was going to say no! He knows I have a weakness for new electronic do-dads.
So now we have a new 42-inch LCD. The shopping, however, was not over. You see, to get any benefit from your expensive HDTV you have to buy special HD stuff, otherwise there's no point in getting the TV. We had to buy an "upconvert" DVD player that makes them look better. And we had to get two different not-so-cheap cables: an HDMI cable for the DVD player and a different one for the Wii. But now he can play "Zelda" in widescreen and in a better resolution, so that's cool. We have satellite now and while we've looked at the HD packages, we're trying to hold off until we move. Also, today David bought a powered antenna so we could get the local HD channels better (our house is kinda out in the country, you know).
We didn't buy an HD or Blu Ray player yet because we don't want to get stuck on the losing end of a format war. Besides, the wallet could use a rest.
A new TV stand was a must because the old one was totally the wrong shape and size. We really want to mount it on the wall, but since we're planning on moving, we decided against it for now.
David and Sam now have their eye on an XBox 360, because wouldn't that look really cool on the new TV?
