Project Runway, Episode 8

Posted January 17, 2008

So every blog I make sure to mention that Chris doesn't deserve to be on the show and that Victorya is evil. I might have to break from tradition and commend Chris on his excellent costume building skills and Victorya... well I'll just give all the credit to Jillian because I love her with all of my heart. Let's just say that Rami took Victorya's place for the soulless weirdo.

This replacement of the "mean one" on Project Runway was solidified when Rami lectured Sweet P as if she were a child and then sass-walked away. The sassafras ass is unacceptable Ramikin.

That nick name doesn't make sense, but who doesn't want to call Rami by his full name meaning "small dish for baking?"

Exactly.

The episode:

The designers sit alongside the runway listening to Heidi click clack in a German accent until she brings out the models. Each model has a distinct hairstyle that will serve as the inspiration for the designers this challenge. The designers choose one by one which model they'd like to work with, keeping in mind that they must design something relevant with the hair. Not only that, but this look must be avant-garde--which means that it needs to be a forward-thinking, innovative, perhaps even extravagant look. The design does not have to be wearable by the every day woman, but a more conceptual piece. This is going to be fun.

Tim Gunn then breaks the news that the designers must work in pairs and choose only one of their models to work with. As always, one designer must be the team leader-- a vulnerable but also sometimes very rewarding place to be. It could mean elimination or immunity for this person.

After the pairs get working--they've picked out their model and decided on a look, purchased fabric and begun their work-- Tim Gunn saunters back into the work room and tells them there will be another look going down the runway. Now the designers must make a wearable translation from their avant-garde piece. This is supposed to be like how retailers take what they see on the runway and make it for the masses. Everyone sighs, some cry (not Ricky though!, and more fabric is purchased and second looks are thrown together.

Top Designs:

Christian and Chris (ruffled nude genius dress with the collar & sleeveless nude blouse with tan skirt)

Christian is the winner and gets immunity for the next round. This dress is incredible. The color and concept is beautiful. Also, the two executed this exquisitely--it could have turned out really disgusting if they didn't know what they were doing. Chris, I can't believe your skills were actually used in a challenge--hoorah. I love that I could see Christian in both of these designs. His wearable look was simple, but chic. He has a very strong point of view which will really help him make it to the final three. He is the fastest little worker. I think he used to work in Santa's workshop with other elves, and now he's going to make it in the real world.

Victorya and Jillian (black trench coat with the pink plaid lining & asymetrical black dress)

That trench coat was cuh-razy. The model completely worked it too; she was just tearing away at it. Obviously the coat was made quite well because she had no mercy when she was vigorously unbuttoning it on the runway. There was so much detail inside the coat and the outfit underneath too. Victorya's awkward, "We have three looks so we should win. (giggle, giggle)" was ... yeeeeks, but who expects Victorya to be socially graceful? Jillian always gets so worried but she repeatedly turns out amazing work. I love you, Jillian. Can you hear me? We're looking at the same moon like in American Tale.... Sooooomewhere oooout there, beneath the pale moooooonliiiiight.... The wearable look was just okay. I actually didn't like it at all, but the trench coat was so intricate it made up for it.

Bottom Designs:

Kit Pistol and Ricky (Little Home on the Prairie apron dress & mini dress with floral pattern)

Oh Kit Pistol--auf wiedersehen my dear girl. I like Kit Pistol's presence on the show, but her designs are not something I yearn to see every week. I think she has some more growing to do as a designer. She needs more of a point of view. I agree with the judges' choice here. The second wearable look was adorable to me. The judges did not feel that way at all. I think something got lost in the translation. Ricky's cut in the wearable dress didn't match the fabric. Blame it on whoever but it was time for Kit to go. Kit Pistol, if you have two suitcases full of friendship you're taking home with you, what did you do with all the clothes you brought to wear?

Rami and Sweet P (draped Rami style corseted dress with pants & gray and silver mini dress)

Dear Rami,

why are you so pretentious?

Stop it.

love, Shannon.

I think Rami should have taken Sweet P's advice at least once. He wouldn't let her in at all. Her wearable dress was adorable and his avant-garde dress was not in-your-face enough. I think his dress looked like a scrapbook... a Victorian scrapbook. How does that feel Rami? huh. HUH? I think Rami makes beautiful things but if he doesn't show something new to the judges they're going to auf him. As for Sweet P, she can make adorable little dresses all day long, but I don't know that she can make a complete look that doesn't involve the cute little dress. A lot of people don't think much of Sweet P, but she makes good stuff. Not groundbreaking... but cute as hell.

The season is coming to a close, only 7 designers left. These next few weeks are going to be trying. If Jillian doesn't make it the final three then I might just... pull a Ricky and cry my heart out.

Good news,

Ricky cries next week.

It felt strange without it this episode. I'm glad we can jump back into normalcy in seven days time.
