An unhealthy obsession
Posted May 16, 2007
Between its use in The Departed and The Sopranos, I have developed an unhealthy obsession with the Pink Floyd song "Comfortably Numb" — the Roger Waters solo version recorded live in Berlin in 1990 with Van Morrison and members of The Band (including Marvell's own Levon Helm on background vocals). In the past few weeks, I have caught myself listening to it about a dozen times a day .. either via YouTube or on The Departed soundtrack (which, by the way, as with most soundtracks from movies directed by Marty Scorsese, is a amazing collection of songs).
Long a fan of Pink, "Comfortably Numb" always fell behind other tracks by the band that I enjoyed more — "Fearless," "Mother," "Young Lust," Wish You Were Here," "Time" — but the live version (minus the guitar theatrics of Pink axe slinger David Gilmour) is transcendent. Long a favorite of mine for his rough, luxuriant voice, the chorus of "Comfortably Numb" (originally sang by Gilmour) is a chorus Morrison was born to sing.
The reworked live version of the song is proof positive that classic rock never goes out of style ... it only improves with age.
P.S. Tony Soprano earned his entrance to Hades with the May 13 episode. If you are not a fan of The Sopranos you should be. It is the best TV out there. Oh, and rent The Departed, it's Scorsese at his finest.
