More ways to celebrate
This year Pops adds dunking booth and apple pie contests
Wednesday, July 2, 2008
The annual free music and fireworks have made Pops on the River the state's largest Fourth of July celebration over the last 25 years, drawing upwards of 30,000 people. But organizers at the Arkansas Democrat-Gazette, parent publication of Sync, say there's even more in store for this year's special anniversary.
“Pops on the River is remaining true to its roots by offering some of the staples that have brought families back each year, including music from the Arkansas Symphony Orchestra and a fantastic fireworks display,” said Tabitha Cunningham, promotions manager for the paper.
“But for the 25th anniversary, we are adding a few exciting elements like the dunking booth that includes famous faces like Wally Hall and Jennifer Christman and fun contests from Jay Grelen and Irene Wassell,” Cunningham said. “We thought it would be fun and interesting to bring in some of our editorial staff, who are the faces of the Arkansas Democrat-Gazette, to Pops on the River.”
Proceeds from the dunking booth, which will cost $5 for three throws, will benefit the Arkansas Foodbank Network.
Contests include a return of the popular Southern Sweet Tea Sip-off from last year and the all-new, all-American Apple Pie Bake-off. To learn more about those or to register, visit www.arkansasonline.com/pops.
Also new this year will be a caricature booth, where for $10, Arkansas Democrat-Gazette cartoonist John Deering will draw portraits of children and adults alike. Other attractions at the event include face painting, a vendor market for arts and crafts, and concessions such as beer, soda, corn dogs, funnel cakes, cotton candy and the like.
Lastly, for those looking to experience Pops on the River from a new perspective, the newly opened pedestrian Junction Bridge will have limited room for spectators. To be on the bridge after 8 p.m. will require a pass, though. Those can be had on a first come, first served basis between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. through July 3 at the offices of the Arkansas Democrat Gazette, 121 E. Capital Ave., in Little Rock.
As always, admission to Pops on the River is free, but donations of nonperishable food items and cash will be accepted by the Arkansas Foodbank Network. Those attending are encouraged to bring blankets or lawn chairs but not pets.
Amphitheater seating will be available, but also on a first come, first served basis.
