Marietta McClure
Marietta McClure

Marietta McClure, 23, of Benton recently met her husband for lunch downtown. Neatly dressed and coifed, it’s hard to guess that McClure would consider her style funky and eclectic.

She explains that she enjoys classic pieces, but outside of work she’s much less conservative than what her outfit today might suggest. She’s a perpetual garage sale patron so a lot of her clothes are second hand.

“My mom and I will go [to garage sales]. She’ll get the paper and put the addresses in my blackberry.” Clothes aren’t the only thing of interest to McClure at yard sales, “half of my house and wardrobe are from garage sales and thrift stores.”

McClure enjoys buying things that aren’t in the best condition so she can refine them herself, be it a chair that needs a coat of paint or a blouse that needs a hole mended. Taking something old and making it new again is second nature to McClure.

“I guess my fashion sense is like my design style in that way.”

the look:

McClure takes the suggested nautical theme of her outfit over the edge with her earrings, which are navy, circular, emblazoned with a gold anchor and have a gold filigree border. These quirky earrings are McClure’s only jewelry, other than her wedding ring, allowing the large earrings to make more of a dramatic impact. In true form, McClure found these earrings at a garage sale for 50 cents.

Keeping a clean palette of navy and white, McClure looks sophisticated and fresh. She credits this combination to the weather, “It’s a pretty day so I wanted to wear white.” After such a declaration, it seemed as though she could not have considered anything else worthy to wear on such a radiant day. Her husband, Kent, interjects, “She tried on five things this morning.”

McClure adds some color to her ensemble with her yellow leather bag. Though she changes which purse she carries every day, she claims this one as her favorite, “because of the color!” Her shoes are brown leather wedges with an elegant strap wrapping around her foot. These shoes are a nice example of how you can wear sandals to work without looking like you just walked off the beach. Investing in a dependable, polished sandal is a nice alternative to those summer flip-flops and can change the status of an entire outfit.
