Nicole Daniel designs masculine looks with a touch of the feminine.

LITTLE ROCK As part of our preview of the Designer's Choice fashion show to be held on Saturday we're giving you a sneak peek at three of the designers in the show. Before we saw the work of Marcus Lewis and Stephanie Thomas. This week's designer is Nicole Daniel, a 25-year-old local model and employee at Scarlet, who has been designing and sewing clothes for six years.
Daniel has had a few designs in shows put on by Scarlet, but this will be her first opportunity to showcase a line of designs on the runway. She attended design school in Dallas, and said she wanted to participate in last year's fashion show, but didn't hear about it in time. As the mother of a 2-year-old daughter and a self-described procrastinator, she's in "panic mode."
"But it's right where I want to be. I work well under pressure."
"I like masculine clothes with a touch of feminine," she said, noting that she has a lot of pants in her collection. "I like it when a woman wears masculine pieces like pants and blouses."
She's inspired by fashion magazines and stays up on trends as an employee who helps buy clothes for Scarlet. "I want to do what everyone is doing but with my own twist," she said. "And a jumpsuit is the most in-style thing you can have right now."
This one is backless with an exposed zipper and pleated pants. "It's an updated version of the harem pant," she said. "It's all black, but that's subject to change."
When visiting Los Angeles, Daniel was lucky enough to squeeze in a trip to Mood for her fabrics. "I could have spent hours in there," she said.
Until she visited the fabric store, her original sketches called for a collection of black, cream and nude clothes, but "that changed when I saw the fabric," she said.
While at the store, one of the employees offered to show her the fabric Marc Jacobs uses, and that's when her plans for a monochromatic collection when awry.
"My finale piece is this really long dress, and I'm going to keep it for myself because it was expensive fabric," she said.
Before starting a project, she usually drapes a dress form and then makes a pattern, but she also sketches on her daughter's Crayola Floor Pad. Her designs call for paperbag waists, high collars, shorts and "one shoulder" blouses.
Her favorite designers are Dolce and Gabbana, Marc Jacobs and Calvin Klein.
